Last night we were delighted to host the first ever Parliamentary Reception for the West Midlands APPG, marking an important milestone for the group and an opportunity to bring together political leaders, partners and stakeholders who share a commitment to the future of the region.

The event brought together over 30 MPs from across the West Midlands, demonstrating the strong cross-party interest in the work of the APPG and the issues facing the region. We were also honoured to welcome Al Carns, Minister for Veterans and People, who joined us for the evening and contributed to discussions about the role culture and place play in shaping thriving communities.

Alongside parliamentarians, the reception was attended by members of our Advisory Board and a range of contributors who played a vital role in our recent inquiry into Culture, Place and Liveability. Their insight, expertise and collaboration have been instrumental in shaping the work of the APPG and ensuring that our research reflects the voices and experiences of people and organisations across the West Midlands.

A key highlight of the evening was the official launch of the final report from the Culture, Place and Liveability Inquiry. The report brings together months of research, consultation and evidence-gathering, exploring how cultural activity, creative industries and local identity contribute to the economic vitality, wellbeing and long-term sustainability of communities across the region.

During the reception we shared the report’s key findings and recommendations with the senior stakeholders in attendance. The response was extremely positive, reflecting both the strength of the evidence gathered and the shared recognition that culture is a vital driver of growth, opportunity and civic pride in the West Midlands.

With the inquiry now complete, our focus turns to delivering on the report’s recommendations. The APPG is committed to working with policymakers, cultural organisations, local authorities and regional partners to help turn these ideas into meaningful action. Our ambition is to support the development of a shared vision for culture across the West Midlands - one that ensures communities across the region can benefit from vibrant cultural life and the opportunities it brings.

Following the success of the inquiry, the APPG will now begin exploring the next phase of its work. At the end of the month, we will meet with our Advisory Board to discuss potential new projects and areas of focus, continuing to build on the momentum generated over the past year.

This reception was an encouraging reminder of the strong appetite for collaboration and ambition for the West Midlands, and we are excited about what comes next.

Stay tuned for further updates as our work continues.
